How I made $2000 on YouTube. What is my RPM? How much I earn per 1000 views in 2021?

How much money does YouTube pay for 1000 views in 2021? What is my RPM? How much does a small youtuber make from YouTube each month from their channel?
This is how I made $2000 with my YouTube channel.
From the beginning of being approved and monetized with 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours watch time through to this month.
I share my RPM (revenue per mille or per thousand), my CTR (click through rate) and monthly revenue payments from Google Adsense.

How did I make two thousand dollars from YouTube?
Nearly fell off!
Yes the... the slightly clickbaity title might be correct.
Look here is my YouTube studio analytics.
My views in 2020: 1994 dollars and if I click up here to the last 365 days...
there's 2033.
It was $2000 in one year!

I’m gonna show you how exactly I made two thousand dollars from YouTube in nine months and I’m going to show you everything.
All my channel analytics, my revenue reports...
I’m also going to go through click-through rates...

This is just an excuse for me to recap how 2020 went and what might happen for me in 2021.
Thanks for coming along with the ride hello I’m Neil Mossey.
I’m a development producer helping high achieving creators and performers just like you...

Awww a left-handed one there - to get ideas out of our heads and out onto here on YouTube to make the world happier.
And I’m really hoping that statistics like this help encourage you to make more and become YouTube monetized.
I know you can do it because I was not expecting this year to go like this.
In a good way!

So let's go full screen on my YouTube studio.
I’ve clicked on the analytics tab.
My goodness right, so there's the views.
Let's click on the revenue because that is the statistics that you want to follow.
Well the first obvious thing about this graph is that I was monetized in March 2020.
I remember it so vividly and it took me four days to become properly monetized.
I earned 14 cents on that day.

I’ve made a whole video about how long it takes to become monetized and the link is in the description and I thought that I would continue to earn three or four dollars a day - which I was very happy with.
What I wasn't expecting, for it to go up like this to around the eight dollars mark in May.
It fell back down again and that was because one video was driving most of my traffic.

It was an old video all about Jean-Claude Van Damme which I’ve now unlisted because I didn't have any other videos on Jean-Claude Van Damme and I want to niche this channel, but we had a good summer... five or six dollars a day... very happy... and then well it starts going up to 10 or 12 dollars a day.
Now I’d like to think it's because my videos are so brilliant and so excellent the algorithm just can't help but double my revenue.
What I think it is, is that advertisers are starting the run into the Christmas and holiday season.
The best day I got was 13.76 at the end of November, so that's right at the peak of shopping and Black Friday.

Predictably it starts falling down again - all the way down to look at this sorry, sorry figure on Christmas Eve of all things.
You scrooge YouTube!
YouTube, you’re a scrooge!
I’m your Bob Cratchit - look you paid me $5.85.
Please sir, can I have some more?!
That's the wrong Dickens book.

Basically now the revenue has plummeted... now YouTube has finished with us for another holiday season!
Let's dive into Reach.
These are my impressions so these are my thumbnails that YouTube has shared.
We've got that one viral video.
An insane number of impressions there but we've fallen down to about 10000 impressions a day and my click-through rate has remained pretty consistent.
Look at that - it's sort of around the 5% mark which means that 5% of all thumbnails get clicked on.

And if we take a closer look at my revenue - which let's face it, that's the only reason we watch these types of videos isn't it.
Now to do that I’ll click up here and I’ll choose custom.
When I was first monetized - this is March I’ve got March in the corner there as a caption - my revenue per mille, or RPM, or revenue per thousand, we--
I still don't know why YouTube wants the Latin.
I think they've chosen the Latin for this because RPM sounds cool.
Sounds like revs per minute!
My revenue per thousand - look at it - it's 52 cents!
Which sort of makes me think that when you become monetized I think the algorithm tries to find commercials and adverts for your channel and it takes a bit of time to... to bed in.

Let me know if you have been monetized recently, let me know if your RPM is really low to begin with.
In April my RPM you can see it right there is doubled which means that I get one dollar per thousand views.
So if you're looking up how much money will I get from YouTube per 1000 views when I become monetized?
This is my answer from the last 12 months: it's about one dollar and 18 cents per thousand views.

We'll change the caption to May and the RPM has doubled again so we're now at $2.24.
It stays around the same in June so we're at $2.54 per thousand views.
The view duration is about 2:40 and the click-through rate is about 5.2 percent.
Now the RPM starts increasing.
This is July so we're over the three dollar almost approaching four dollars per thousand views.
It's still increasing in August $4.88 per 1000 views.
And a big leap in September we're now up to six dollars 25 cents per 1000 views.
Now I don't know if this is because of anything that I’m doing.

I am becoming more specific, my videos are more about this: how to express yourself on YouTube.
They're not bringing in that much traffic on these months, so it could be that my garden tools videos are bringing in a better class of YouTube viewer?
Maybe the kind of people that advertisers want to reach on YouTube?
Up yet another dollar in October to $7.38 cents per thousand.

Right so the... the RPM does not stop going up it's going up and up we're now at $8.71.
This is really the push towards Christmas and you can see, look at this: highest payment ever of $13.76 happens on the very last day of November.

And finally December: we're at $8.44 so it's starting to drop and that's because Christmas is over so the advertisers don't quite want to reach people.
That's... that's my RPM graph you can see it really starting to fall and if I compare that with the last 28 days it... you can see it really plummeting now this really is how YouTube creators face the... the falling CPM which is what the advertisers pay.
If you want to see a really stark difference let me show you the last seven days. the RPM is $5.90.
I mean it has really plummeted and apparently this is something that happens each and every year.
My dad's a taxi driver, he calls it the kipper season because that's all you can afford to eat in January and February.
People just aren't spending money.

Do you have any questions about YouTube analytics or the AdSense payments? Leave a comment below, I’d love to hear your experiences and... and to actually see your YouTube channel as well.
How close are you to becoming monetized and getting that 1000 subscribers or 4000 hours watch time, because we need your stuff in the world.
We need more people being happy watching YouTube, so please plug your stuff in the comments and this is what YouTube thinks you should be watching next!

Change your YouTube channel name on your PHONE? Works for Android, iPhone, iPad Apple Mac app 2021

How to change my YouTube's channel name just by using the YouTube app?
Yes, in this video I walk through a step by step tutorial on how to change your YouTube channel name on your cell phone or mobile device, only using the YouTube app.
Let me know in the comments if this works on your Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad!

If you want to change your YouTube channel name to a single word or something instead of first name last name as a Google Brand Account channel, my tutorial is here:

Can you change your YouTube channel name just using this?
Your phone or any other mobile device.
Yes, I think you can!
And I'm gonna do this right now in front of you in real time so that you can follow along step by step.

Hello, I'm Neil and I am a Development Producer helping high-achieving creators and performers just like you to get ideas out of your head and out onto here on YouTube.

And you and me are going to do this right now, so I'm going to punch-up my screen.
Now as you can see, I'm using an Android phone but I think this method works for any mobile device or even an ipad or iphone.

If it does work for you, please leave a comment below and let me know how you get on with this.
First thing we need to do is to click on your face in the top right hand corner.

And it's crucial that obviously you're logged into the correct channel if you have more than one.
If you need to switch accounts, you can just click on "switch account", and choose the channel that you want to change.

Now I... I don't want to change the name of this channel, I want to change the name of THIS channel.
So now we're definitely logged into the correct channel, we're going to click on the channel icon again.
And then click on "Your channel".

Now this brings up your channel home page.
And we actually have 3 different menus that we can alter things on our channel.
There are the 3 dots on the top right hand side, where you have "settings" there.

This isn't what we need, but just to show you, you've got all these other settings for your channel on those 3 dots.
We also have "Manage videos" where you can see all of the videos on your channel, even the unlisted and private ones, which is useful.

But we'll go back because the button we want is "Edit channel".
And here we have a page of channel settings.
The setting we need, and it's not entirely super obvious, but this pen icon here...

If I click on it, it brings up the name of your YouTube channel, so we can change this right now.
I want to change my channel name to this: Neil's Trains and Stops.
I've got to come up with a better name!

If you can think of a better name for my geeky train channel, leave a comment in the comments below!
But I'm going to click OK for now.
This is what it's gonna be called: Neil's Trains and Stops.
That works!

But, you might not have had that box come up.
Your box might look like this.
And... and obviously it would have the first name and last name of your YouTube channel here, not First Name Last Name.

If your channel name change box looks like this, and you don't want it to be First Name Last Name, I have a whole other video that walks you through how to turn your personal YouTube account into a Brand account.

It sounds really complicated but it's really simple and straightforward, I made a video all about it.
That link is on screen now, and in the description.
But if this video is helping you why not consider hitting the thumbs up or subscribe for some more other tips, and right here is what YouTube thinks you want to be watching next.

I un-booked CHRIS ROCK... How to find a daily story for my YouTube vlog?

This is an attempt at "How to find a daily story for a YouTube vlog".
My search every day took me here, a story about one of my worst moments in my job.
I'm a development producer, and one day I got the internationally famous comedian and movie star Chris Rock booked for a show... except I didn't and then I had to un-book him.
Can I find a happy ending?

I un-booked CHRIS ROCK... How to find a daily story for my YouTube vlog?

TRANSCRIPT: (CLICK PLAY ON THE VIDEO ABOVE)

THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT - CLICK PLAY ON THE VIDEO ABOVE!

Every morning I go for a walk and usually I just end up daydreaming...
...and the daydream I had this week was: "What if I could find a story?"
One story and share it on YouTube, so this is how it worked out.
Hello I'm Neil by the way.

I'm a development producer helping high achieving creators and performers just like you to get ideas out of your head and out onto here on YouTube, and this is my attempt this week to get some ideas out of my head.

On Saturday I saw this clip and it had a really big effect on me.
"A really uncontrollable angry pack of bananas."
"Snow White and the seven dwarfs."
"Sorry, no it was The Wild Bunch!
Plenty of time to catch up, it's a lovely contest so far, Dennis..."
Not that one.

It was this clip of Chris Rock on the Howard Stern show talking about how he was bullied at school, and then he bumped into one of his bullies.

He was working as a security guard on his movie set.
A guy who literally one day turned me upside down and shook the money out of my pockets and I'm filming a scene and I look and I'm like is that b?

And he nodded, you know he was kind of ashamed, and I just gave him just a quick look like... "Hey man I hope you're doing well, you take care" and I kept it moving.
I didn't like get him off the set.
His sin had punished him, he could have been my friend.

The fact that he had to go through that whole day and watch me walk around and watch me.
I was directing a movie and it'd be so close to me but yet so far.
Do you ever watch Bugs Bunny?

When did Elmer Fudd get really mad at Bugs Bunny?
Not when he shothim in the face with an anvil.
Do you know when Elmer Fudd got really mad?

When Bugs Bunny kissed him, that's when he would lose his mind.
And when somebody like does you wrong, just give 'em a kiss.
Just give him a kiss.
Shall I tell you my Chris Rock story?

The... the story where I booked... I actually booked Chris Rock for a TV show that I was producing and then I de-booked him.
I unbooked him, I don't know what the right word is.

I uninvited him from the TV show.
It's a short story and it hasn't got a happy ending.
Or maybe it does, I don't know see what you think but anyway back in 2001 I was a producer.
I-- here's footage of me on a comedy interview series.

It was shot on location - outdoors mainly in the United States.
Really big high-profile names the... the show was tiny but we had this amazing guest booker.
This American guest booker in the States who's just getting us these ridiculous Hollywood names.

This is me and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
He was getting about ten... fifteen thousand dollars per guest that he booked, but man...
I don't know what-- I DO know some of the things that he did to to get us these guests.
Uh so, he really put himself on the line and really came up with the goods.

Anyway I get a call from this amazing guest booker and he says "Neil, I think I've got Chris Rock. Do you want Chris Rock on your show?
And I yes, yes!
He said: Are you sure, because I need to know now because I need to I need to make the arrangements with the publicist.

I think it was for us to do something really cool like ride along with him in a limo to the Grammys or something but whatever it was it was a good chunk of time.
Enough to shoot this one hour comedy interview show with Chris Rock!
So I said yes!
Yes please! That's fantastic! Nice one!

So he goes off and and makes the arrangements with Chris Rock's people and because he's in the United States and we're here in the UK I couldn't tell the channel - the TV channel that this programme was for - I couldn't tell them until the next morning.
So the next morning I send an email saying "we've got Chris Rock!" and I got a reply which was...
"Ah no. I don't think so.
It's not for us."

So now there's a to-and-fro of emails and I think it went something along the lines of...
"But it's Chris Rock!"
And the reply was: "Yeah but he's not really... he's not really our audience."
We're to'ing and fro'ing and basically they don't want Chris Rock but I've...

But I've booked him!
Shall I tell you which TV channel this is?

I'll put it in the comments so that I can delete it because I'm a wuss and they can still hunt me down like a dog.
They would not budge.
They did not want Chris Rock as a guest on this programme.
To give you an idea of how big Chris Rock was back then even - you know this is footage of him interviewing Prince four years before we booked him.

He's funny and famous they just didn't want to know, so now I've got to go back to the guest booker and and tell him that they don't want him.

I'm shaking while I'm telling you this story.
Not because I'm angry.

Maybe I should be, but because I'm embarrassed.
I was really embarrassed that this guy had really gone out on a limb and yet they didn't want him and I remember the tone of the voice of the guest booker.

He was bewildered and offered to send them tapes which... but I had to explain that they just did not want to budge.
"It's it's not for us.
"I don't think it's our audience."

So then I had to unbook Chris Rock.
I had to - I think I blamed it on logistics and not being able to get a camera crew out for the date that they had suggested, but man that was horrible.

And it made me think: "Well maybe I'm doing this job wrong."
I felt bad that I couldn't persuade someone that this was a good idea.
This was a fantastic idea.

This would have been a fantastic booking for the show and I'm probably embarrassed because I'm sure I've done the same thing to other people over the years.

On the upside, this is why I love YouTube.
What I love about this - about you and me making things on YouTube is that we do not have to ask permission from anyone to have a go at making something that we think is good.

We can make stuff.
We can make whatever we like without having to ask permission from anybody and I absolutely love this.

So Chris Rock is absolutely right.
"And when somebody like does you wrong... just give 'em a kiss."
I'm gonna leave you with some footage of some baby rats to cheer me up.
Look there they are.

Do you have a story?
Do you have a story from the last 24 hours?

Please put it in the comments, I'd love to hear it or even better make a video about it and post the link in the comments below.
If you've reached this point in the video why not give me a thumbs up?
That would be really helpful or even hit the subscribe button, and on screen now is what YouTube thinks you should be watching next!

YOUTUBE FEATURED CHANNELS How I link and add channels to my other channel? 2021 Tutorial

How do I add FEATURED CHANNELS to my YouTube channel?
Featured channels appear on your channel home page, and under the CHANNELS tab.
When you include friends’ channels and/or other channels you enjoy, the featured channels list will create a connection in people’s minds and in the algorithm between your channel and these featured channels.

YOUTUBE FEATURED CHANNELS! How I link and add channels to my other channel? 2021 Tutorial

TRANSCRIPT: (CLICK PLAY ON THE VIDEO ABOVE)

THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT - CLICK PLAY ON THE VIDEO ABOVE!
How can I link to other YouTube channels on my YouTube channel, as a featured channel?
I said the word “channel” way too much there...

Hello I’m Neil and I do a lot of experiments here on YouTube - and I have this YouTube channel.
But I’ve just created a few other new YouTube channels and I want to link to those on my channels.

I want them to appear like this, as featured channels.

And I found it really difficult to find where to link other YouTube channels to my YouTube channel, so I’m going to walk you through the process step by step.

This is my YouTube studio dashboard and on the left hand side if we click on these three lines, it expands the menu and we want to go down to here:
“Customization”.

This opens up a menu for customizing your channel so at the top here we've got a channel trailer and then you might be aware of this but this is where you can put rows of videos for your YouTube channel page.
I kind of like to think of them as bookshelves.
It's not very intuitive but this is how you link a featured channel.

If we click on “add section” and you get lots of options to add a section but right at the bottom that's where it's hidden:
Featured Channels.

Because this is going to appear on my channel page it's... it's asking me to think of a title, so I’m going to call it “my other lovely channels”
I’ll think of something better later, you can change this at any time.

So let's find that travel channel that I’ve made.
It's called Neil's trains and stops and this search box has found the channel!
Even though there's an apostrophe in the channel name, that hasn't stopped it from tracking down the channel I’m looking for.

You can link to your channel or other people's channels.
I’m just being arrogant and selfish and linking to my channels, so we're going to click on this check box here.
Tick!

And on the right hand side here you can see that it has appeared in the list.
My other channel is called Tightwad Dad - there it is!
Wow that's found it really quickly, so I’ll tick that box.
If you can't find your channel by doing a search I tried this:

Just go to the channel that you want to link to and at the top you can see in the URL it says YouTube.com/channel and then it's got this code here.
It's like a series of letters and underscores and numbers.

I’m going to highlight that, that's a unique URL name for the channel.
This is what the channel is actually called and I’m going to copy that.
And if I paste that channel URL into the search box you can see it's found the channel instantly.
There is one exception to this.

If like this one - this is my IKEA Dad channel - I’ve not added any videos to this channel, and if I look up “IKEA Dad” there are no matching results.
Basically it won't link to channels that don't have any videos on them yet.

When you've found all the channels that you want to link to, just go down to “done” and there they are.
They appear as a little shelf on your channel home page, but something more special than that happens.
If I hit “publish”... and here is my lovely YouTube channel!

If I scroll down, you can see these shelves mirror the sections in the customization menu... And there they are!
At the bottom!
My other lovely channels! Yes!

On the tabs at the top of your channel page we have videos, playlists, community...
If I hit “channels” there they are - my other lovely channels.
And you can just click on them to go to them directly, and there is my other lovely channel: Neil's Trains and Stops.

Now the hope and the wish is of course that if you make this link to your other channels, or to other people's channels, there'll be some kind of link in the algorithm - or at least in people's minds - that you are publicly linked to these channels.

If you want to see if this has any effect on my channel, or maybe even have a look at some of my other YouTube experiments, why not hit the subscribe button?
It'd be great to have you along for the ride and right here right now is what YouTube thinks you should be watching next!

How do I edit my YouTube videos?
That's a very kind question that I’ve been asked in the comments on my YouTube channel and it got me thinking.

What if I were to share my entire edit process with you in real time right here and share the whole process from beginning, right through to the end.
And of course whenever I get an idea like this I’m terrified.
This time I think it's because I work with the best, absolutely the best video editors in the industry.

Look, here's footage of me working with two of them right now in the Before Times, obviously.
This is how we'd work together.
Everyone's gone to the pub.
And, we're still here.
Hi!
Now obviously I don't want those amazing video editor friends of mine to see this video at all.

I am definitely not a video editor and this is definitely not a Final Cut Pro tutorial.
It's more of a... a ride-along.
Uh, you can sit in an edit session with me.
How exciting!
I’m gonna fast forward through as much as possible, so any boring bits I’ll try and speed up.
You'll get a sense of how my edit session works.

Hello I’m Neil Mossey, and I’m a development producer helping high achieving creators and performers just like you - high five! - to help you get ideas out of your head and out onto here on YouTube where they belong.

Where you can make the world a happier place, and I’m going to see if I can keep your attention for longer than two minutes because the most important thing with editing is...
So I’m going to put my camera file onto the timeline first.
I hit “W”.

The next thing I usually do is to add some compression to my speaking.
It gives it a bit more oomph, and then after the compression it looks like this, so next I’ll just have a quick whiz through the intro to get up to the point where I’m speaking over the screen recording.
I tend to record too many takes for my intro.
It's a way that I psychologically get into doing this.

Here in the waveform you can see my three hand claps.
I’ll drop the screen recording onto the timeline and then I’ll drag myself on top of it.
Command X to cut, and jump to the beginning, and then command V to paste.
I can't see the hand claps on there!
Right, really helpfully I’ve started the screen recording AFTER the handclaps!
Those claps are meant to synchronize the... the timing of the screen recording with my camera recording.

But a lot of the time I just do it by ear.
It doesn't have to be that precise because it's only a screen recording.
So I can hear a delay, so all I need to do is move this across so that they are in sync.
All I need to do now is to kill the audio of the screen recording and then I need to move myself up into the corner into a box.
I select my camera footage and I use transform.

You can see I’ve got dots around my camera footage and if I shrink the picture you can see there we go - disappear into... into space and I’ll put that on the top right hand corner.
I try to make this box as... as big as possible - as you can probably see now!
This is going to fry my brain in the edit because I’m doing this on this video that you're watching right now.
I’ll just move myself across, and you can see I’ve got a lot of room to the side of me there which we don't really need, so I use trim to bring this down... so we'll click on this menu.
Click on crop.
Difficult to say.

And I’m going to shrink that.
Something like that.
I don't want it to be too tight but I need as much screen real estate as possible so I might go back to transform just move me over just a little bit.

That looks okay.
The next thing I do is to resize the screen recording so that I can fill as much of this picture with the material that I’m talking about.

Man this chair is really starting to annoy me!
To resize my screen recording I don't hit use transform, I just use crop, and you can see I can shrink down that's a screen size window which is really handy, so I try to get the YouTube logo in just so that you can see what I’m talking about.

That sort of looks like enough and if I hit done you can see now that the screen recording fills the screen - which looks great - and the picture of me in the box doesn't look too intrusive.
[VIDEO SOUND:] And we want to go down to here, customization.
I put lots and lots of pauses in my speech and I tend to take them all out.
I’m probably leaving them all in here, but usually on my videos I try to snip out these... these little pauses.

My worry is that by taking them out, anyone watching my videos will hate the way that I speak normally - so it doesn't seem to be serving my long-term interest to be taking these little pauses out.
But leaving them in is just as annoying for me to listen to so... I’ll take them out for now.
Now the way I make an edit to keep the screen recording in sync with my talking over the screen recording, I’m going to have to cut both the camera footage and the screen recording footage.
And to do that, I select all so that's command-A

Now when I make a cut with command-B it slices through both sections: both the camera footage and the screen recording.
And if we're coming back in here...
[VIDEO SOUND:]  this opens
I think that looks like a good spot.

I’ll do the same thing again, so command-A and then command-B.
And then when I remove this section, it stays in sync and hopefully the edit sounds like this.
[VIDEO SOUND:]  it expands the menu and we want to go down to here customization this opens up a menu
I am very comfortable with my videos jump cutting as you've probably seen already.

I would much prefer to give a signal to the viewer that I am not wasting their time at all so I have no problem whatsoever with... with jump cuts.
I try to make them less messy and I’ll show you how I do that with the edits but I’m not too precious about my footage jumping around.
I just want to get through what I want to share as quickly as possible and I think it sends a good signal to the viewer.
Even though it's something that TV and cinematic editors absolutely hate!

[VIDEO SOUND:] so at the top here we've got a channel trailer for
[VIDEO SOUND:] for people who are and
[VIDEO SOUND:] a channel trailer for people who are subscribed or not and then you might be aware of this but this is where you can put different shelves different lines rows of rows of videos for your for your YouTube channel rows of videos
[VIDEO SOUND:] different shelves different lines
[VIDEO SOUND:] put different shelves different
[VIDEO SOUND:] you can put different shelves different rows of videos for your YouTube channel page these are my rows I kind of like to think of them as bookshelves and then
[VIDEO SOUND:] and then you might be aware of this but this is where you can put different shelves different rows of video
[VIDEO SOUND:] different rows of videos for your YouTube
[VIDEO SOUND:] yeah those for your YouTube rows of videos for your YouTube channel page these are my rows these are my rows I kind of like to think
[VIDEO SOUND:] i kind of like to think of them page these are my YouTube channel page
[VIDEO SOUND:] YouTube channel page because I kind of like to think that
[VIDEO SOUND:] page I kind of like to think of them as bookshelves
Can you hear here, I have a little lip smack which is something I tend to do a lot.
If I run the the play head over it
[VIDEO SOUND:] let's turn it off
Did you hear that?
So I’ll put the cut slightly after it.

You can see it, it's just on this waveform here.
I’m just going to go after the this lip smack.
[VIDEO SOUND:] sort of it's not very
There’s a horrible swallow as well, so we'll get rid of that.
[VIDEO SOUND:] there's bookshelves it's not very intuitive
[VIDEO SOUND:] it's not very intuitive but this is how you add but this is how you link something definitive but this is how you add but this is how you link
[VIDEO SOUND:] shelves it's not very intuitive but this is how you link a featured channel

I keep making mistakes while I’m doing it.
I’m always... always using command-Z or command Z which is undo, undo, undo!
I had a friend who said “wouldn't it be great if you could just apple Z things in life?”
That's quite a philosophy.

Now when I get to the end of this I’m going to be resizing the screen recording so we can zoom in on what we're talking about and zoom out.
I’m just cutting this for audio.
I just want my dialogue soundtrack to be continuous and I’ll make the screen recording fit and time with my speech.

I have a feeling this is going to be quite a long video so there are chapters in the description below if you want to jump ahead.
[MUSIC]
So I’ve got a section here where I’m talking about the URL at the top of the browser and obviously I’ve cropped that off.
So I’m going to re-position the screen recording so that we can see what I’m talking about.
And just reposition that now, so go to the crop and then I’ll move this crop up to here so I’ll take out this gap.

And I’ll go super big on the URL here, so I’ll use crop and I’ll zoom all the way up and my face is going to obscure some of this.
I wonder if I should move it across.
I might move it across.
I think if I hold down command while I’m moving it... it allows you to move it more smoothly.
Done.
I’m going to go full frame on me.

Sorry, that was me “going full frame”!
I’m going to fill the frame with this shot to hide the jumpy join.
If I highlight this, I’m going to take off the crop so I’m going to untick transform and crop and you can see that I’ve removed the crop so I’m going to fill the picture.
I’ll play it through and you can see what it looks like.
[VIDEO SOUND:] A unique URL name for the channel this is what the channel's actually got...
There.

It just helps the viewer feel like I’m... “I’m here for you” rather than blathering away over a screen recording.
The reason I chose to cut there to come back to the screen recording was: have a look at my face.
[VIDEO SOUND:] for the channel
There.

Can you see that I blinked there?
Let me show you again.
I blinked before I looked down.
T here's a theory of cutting on the blink, and basically when we're talking, we provide little edit points when we blink.

It's when we give chunks of information or when we're taking in chunks of information.
It's almost like our brain shutting everything down parking it in our brains and then opening our eyes again.
Bizarrely if you ever want to know how to time when is the right point to edit yourself, your eyes blink at the... at the right moment!
Your eyes give you the... the clue.

So if you watch that while you're editing, these little blinks that you're doing subconsciously without even realizing it, they're providing all the edit points that an edited video is actually trying to recreate.
It's one of the best theories I’ve been given about editing.
[MUSIC]
Now here we have a problem because the thing that I’m talking about on screen recording is actually hidden by me - by my box.

Let's start it here, so I’m going to move that over to here and I’m going to crop the right hand side of my box, and now I’m obscuring the left-hand side of the screen so I’ll probably resize this screen recording, to go crop...
Let's make it bigger.
I don't really like doing this but I might have to move my box to the middle.

I really don't like putting my box at the bottom of the screen it's like it diminishes my own authority on my own channel!
Let's put it to there.
It doesn't look right but at least you get to see everything we need to see.
[VIDEO SOUND:] ikea dad there are no matching results basically it won't link to channels that don't have any videos on them yet when you've found all the channels...
I’m going to do something different here, so what I’m going to do now is detach the audio.

So it means that when I turn off my vision I’m going to hit the letter V to turn off my video so we can still hear me talking.
[VIDEO SOUND:]  obviously you want to
Which wouldn't have happened if I hadn't detached the audio, and we'll just go big on the screen recording so if I resize this...
I want to see the “done” there.
Centre it.
[VIDEO SOUND:] goes on them yet when you've found all the channels that you want to link to just go down to done

So about here I’m going to cut close to the word “DONE”.
[VIDEO SOUND:] yet when you've found all the channels that you want to link to just go down to done...
I quite like that!
[MUSIC]
[VIDEO SOUND:] and right here right now is what YouTube thinks you should be watching next oh my god.
That's my stomach! (LAUGHTER)
Let's try again.
[MUSIC]

So I’ve had a little break.
I’ve got a cup of hot chicory drink and some chocolate from whoa... some chocolate from Cornwall.
I’m also wearing my Christmas hat because it's so cold here in the happy hut.
I’m going to go through the whole video again.
It's five minutes 16 seconds long. I’m gonna really tighten it up.
[MUSIC]
This is where I would put in my name strap.

I’ve got this pre-prepared as an animation that I made in keynote.
All I need to do is to hit Q
I’ve got a selection of things that I use in pretty much every video.
Like there's a comment button... a little subscribe button...
By the way if you're here at this point, thank you so much!

If you've made it this far please hit the thumbs up button just to let me know someone reached this point.
I can't believe you're still watching this, but kudos to you.
And that thumbs up animation along with my subscribe animation - hint! - is all on here as green screens.
I’ll put those ones on   the video - and it drops about there.
[VIDEO SOUND:] the channel way too much there hello I’m neil and I do a lot of experiments here on YouTube.

Let's now go through the rest of the video!
[MUSIC]
This is the about the time I start to drop in my little arrows just to help the viewer register what I’m actually talking about.
I’ve got the arrow in my evergreen folder.

Hit Q to drop it onto the timeline and then I use transform to position it, so I’ll rotate it.
And I made this arrow in keynote as well which is the mac powerpoint presentation program.
It’s free and it's absolutely fantastic.
You can export pictures like this so that the background is transparent.
[MUSIC]

So now it's time for me to do the final pass and I find this part of the edit the absolute hardest because technically it's the easiest and I’m just so close to having this thing finished.
And yet I’ve gotta look at my stupid face for yet another possibly an hour.
I’m gonna try and do this as quickly as possible but this is the pass where I put all the final graphics and do any more nips and tucks that need doing and it's also when I add the music bed and the sound effects.
I hold down the command button when I’m adjusting the audio levels.

If you do it just by dragging this bar up and down, it's really difficult to get the exact number of decibels you want.
But if you hold down the command key on your mac keyboard you can get it going up and down in increments of one.
The other thing I do at the beginning is, I have a title that drops down and I use keynote.
I just copy and paste the last strap.
Put something like “How to link your channel... or try “how to link my channel”
That looks good!
[MUSIC]

The last thing that I do that I always, always leave to the very last thing is to make a little montage at the beginning of the thing that I’m talking about.
So let's take a listen to what I’m going to cover.
[VIDEO SOUND:] but I’ve just created a few other new YouTube channels and I want to link to those on my channels. I want them to appear like this as featured channels and I found it really difficult to find where to link other YouTube channels to my YouTube channel.

I can see here, it's about 15 seconds that I’m looking to cover, so what-- all I do for this is I just scroll through the video and anything that leaps out as being really... that looks good, kinetic moving pictures...
I like that that big close-up of the word “Featured channels” and I’ll paste it right at the beginning just so I can remember where it is.

Now that looks good, so grab that and the arrow, and I’ll use that for when I say the words “appear on your channel as featured channels”.
I might take that because that's a nice scroll.
Yes I’ve just got a bunch of shots, and then I’m just going to drag them up here for when I’m talking, so drag it up and then I’ll cut... and I’ll paste it over here.
Now this seems like an insane amount of time to be spending on a few seconds at the opening, but I just want to stop that drop off.

I’m going to keep the audience watching so I really do tend to over invest a bit of editing time on the first 30 seconds.
So it's a bit too much, I’ll make it smaller and then paste it into position.
[VIDEO SOUND:] new YouTube channels and I want to link to those on my channels
I can't move these up, uh so I’ll move the arrow to one side then I’ll move this up to here and then I’ll put the arrow back in the right place to there I think it is.
Let's play that through
[VIDEO SOUND:] YouTube channel but I’ve just created a few other new YouTube channels and I want to link to those on my channels. I want them to appear like this
So I’m just going to fill that gap.

I think I think I’m going to fill the entire gap.
And I’ll just grab the tick where I check that check box.
That's a bit too much, give it a bit more breathing space.
Grab that one, put it there.
And I grab this one, put it there.
And then finally, the final piece of the puzzle, oh that's in the wrong place... so I want to put that one there and that one here and I’ll make this smaller.

My opening montage looks like this.
[VIDEO SOUND:] and I have this YouTube channel but I’ve just created a few other new YouTube channels and I want to link to those on my channels. I want them to appear like this as featured channels and I found it really difficult to find where to link other YouTube channels to my YouTube channel so I’m going to walk you through...
That sort of works.
I don't like it because this this shot doesn't really do anything, so what I might do is just reinstate this clip.

Oh that's perfect.
So I’ll hide that and let's see how this looks.
[VIDEO SOUND:]  and I have this YouTube channel but I’ve just created a few other new YouTube channels and I want to link to those on my channels I want them to appear like this as featured channels and I found it really difficult to find where to link other YouTube channels to my YouTube channel so I’m going to walk...
Great so that works really well.

Right, so I want some sound effects to happen here.
Let's have a pop.
[VIDEO SOUND:] I have this YouTube channel but I’ve just created a few other new YouTube channels and--
What I might do actually, let's have a crash.
I’ve got an even bigger crash.

This is a really over-the-top crash.
[CRASH!]
I love that one!
Let's-- let's do it, and then I’ll move this pop onto there, so the crash goes here.
I might have to check the sound level because it's going to be really loud.
[VIDEO SOUND:] and I have this YouTube channel...
It's a bit too loud.

Take it down to about minus eight?
Let's try
[VIDEO SOUND:]  and I have this YouTube channel but I’ve just created a few other new YouTube channels...
And then I want a clang there, so the ship bell.
[VIDEO SOUND:]  I want them to appear like this as featured channels and I found it really difficult to find where...

And then another pop.
[VIDEO SOUND:] to my YouTube channel so I’m going
I need a couple of clicks I think, so let's put in a click here.
[VIDEO SOUND:] do link other YouTube channels to my YouTube channel so I’m going to walk you through the process.
I’ve got a nice shot of my channel page, it's a bit less frenetic.

I’m going to reuse the clips I had here.
[VIDEO SOUND:] rows of videos for your YouTube channel page. I kind of like to think of them as...
Obviously we don't to see that I’ve managed to get the channels - featured channels - so the scroll will end there.
I might slow it down a bit and I might crop in a bit as well.
So we just see the channel.

Let's try that and let's get a couple of sound effects on and have a little pop for it to appear.
[VIDEO SOUND:] and then you might be aware of this but this is where you can put rows of videos for your YouTube channel page.

Let's try that.
[VIDEO SOUND:] videos for your YouTube channel page because I kind of like to think of them as bookshelves it's not very intuitive but this is how you link a featured channel if we click on...
That... that'll do.
I’m done!
It's all finished so all I need to do now is export it and upload to YouTube.
Is this helping?

Is it helping to see how I edit my YouTube videos on Final Cut Pro?
If you're cutting on iMovie at the moment and thinking whether or not to step up, I... Agh, do it!
Do it if you can afford it.
It's insanely expensive but I find it a lot easier to manage video files in Final Cut Pro.
I’ve just realized I’ve got to... I’ve now got to edit this one!

THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT - CLICK PLAY ON THE VIDEO ABOVE!

Hello, I've wanted to make this video for a very long time but it takes a degree of confidence to do this.
I don't even know if I'll release this but I have received a number of comments - very kind comments saying that they love how my shot looks here on YouTube and asking me how do I light my YouTube videos?

How... what lighting do I use to make my YouTube videos.
I don't think it's the best but I've been making lots and lots of little changes.
That's another reason why I've not made this video because the changes are happening all the time, so I thought in this video I'll show you everything.
I'm going to take you around... oh hello you're over there.
I'm going to show you around the YouTube home studio and I'm going to show you some of the choices that I've made.

Maybe you'll make better choices, but this is what I've got.
It's a pretty budget setup but I'm going to walk you through some of the steps I've taken to make the picture warmer, because my videos used to look like this.

And they're good... I was happy with them, but over time I think I'm happier with how this shot looks right now.

I very rarely cut to this view where you get to see everything so I'm going to stay with this view... so if you just excuse me on this camera, camera one.
We'll come over to camera two.
Hello, ah come closer because we love you.

There you go, so this is the Happy Hut.
This is my YouTube studio.
This is my YouTube studio setup.
Let's give you a 360 degree tour and I'm going to pick out some of the - woah, I'm tangled up.

I'm going to pick out some of the choices that I've made to try and make the the picture warmer, so the first thing right here is the first improvement was the Sony ZV1 camera or ZV 1.
I've made a number of videos about that but that has really improved the the picture quality and everything is mostly in focus now which is a huge help.

I don't know if I should show this, but this little thing on the side...
When I was growing up, I grew up in in London and Thames Television was my local TV station.
I wanted one of these Thames Television cameras and look I've managed to get one.
I've also got an outside broadcast truck.

Again this isn't quite as good as the real thing, but anyway we're here for the lighting.
The... the first transformation was the rope lights.
I have this rope light around the room.
I think it gives it a really nice warm glow.

I also have a couple of spotlights so there are a couple on the wall and there's this battery-operated one here just to give me a little kicker on the wall.
I really shouldn't be showing this but the one that really helps me is this one here.
It's a waterproof hand light that I got for my gopro and the way that works is I just put it there out of shot and it just brings up the armchair.
If I cut to this camera, this is what it looks like without the light.

The middle of the armchair looks a little dark so just give it a little... a little lift there.
I don't know if you can tell the difference.
I can tell the difference, so no one will ever notice that and everyone who's missed this video won't know that little secret.

Over here, let's pick up the camera again.
This is a massive change for me, I can turn this light off.
This is what the the room looks like without the light on, so it does have quite a pronounced effect.
What
I used to have was an LED strip behind the camera.
If I cut back to camera two I can switch it on.
I've got a little switch there.

This... this kind of helped.
It got torn so it's supposed to be two strips there.
I don't know if I can get it going.

There, while the blue tack holds.
This used to be my lighting for some of my videos but I didn't like the lines.
It puts some white lines in my pupils and there was something that looked a bit odd and a bit off with that.
So I'll turn that off and then I bought this panel light here from a supermarket.

And it's just a domestic light but to me this feels great.
This is like a light box and I have it just off to one side, just to hit this side here and I have another lamp on this side which doesn't make that much difference.
It probably helps during the daytime more but you can see it's a bit... it's a bit too dark without it so I find it better to just have just a little bit of light there.

The hut is in a bit of a state at the moment.
The Happy Hut is a bit of a messy hut.

Let's pick out a couple of things.
On the bench behind, that I usually cover...
They're my scripts.

So I've got into a habit now of writing out bullet points in biro just to beat out some of the things that I want to cover on the videos.
That's a shot of some of my reference books for my script writing and over here I've got more LED lights.
I might put another strip at the back, but I got this from ikea.

It's going to feature on my ikea dad channel very soon.
It's a foam - sort of padded foam board that I want to use for soundproofing and I want to put that up on the on the roof around just to deaden the sound in here a bit.
I'm hoping Santa Claus is going to bring me a new lapel mic.

I love this mic it's the Boya BY-M1.
I have a whole video explaining why I love this microphone so much.
I'm going to see if I can upgrade a lapel mic just to see if the sound can be a bit better - a bit warmer?

So what do you think?
Is this helpful?
I absolutely love watching YouTube home studio tours.
I've seen my favorites are... you know... from Sara Dietschy and DSLRshooter...
And my favorite one of all is any video showing behind the scenes at Casey Neistat.

Obviously the master of the YouTube home studio tour, but if there's anything you want to see or if you can see any improvements that you would make to this setup, please leave a comment below.
It'd be lovely to hear from you, and leave a link to your home studio tours!
I want to see your places as well.
If this video is helping why not give it a thumbs up to let me know, and obviously if you haven't subscribed yet as I experiment and tweak further.
And right here is what YouTube thinks you should be watching next.

THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT - CLICK PLAY ON THE VIDEO ABOVE!

How much money does YouTube pay me this month: the month after I deleted 146 videos from this channel?
That's half my videos!
I’m going to let you into my YouTube studio dashboard. We're gonna... we're gonna see everything.
I’m going to see my analytics... My Analllylllallalaaa? I’m going to see my analytics?
I’m going to show you my analytics... Google Adsense payments... my average watch time, even my click-through rates!

Yes my click-through rates and I don't even think I’m allowed to show you my CTR levels, so quick we've got to do this before they shut me down!
Hello I’m Neil Mossey, I’m a development producer helping high achieving creators and performers just like you to get ideas out of your head and out onto here on YouTube where they belong.
Especially if you have a background like me in broadcast radio or television.
Look here's some footage of me right now as station manager running my college radio station, playing the B-sides and album tracks that you just can't hear anywhere else!

[VIDEO:] “...they'll play the b sites and album tracks that you just can't hear anywhere else.”
I don't know what it means either, so let's get into my YouTube studio and have a look at some money figures.
And look at it, it's looking lovely.

2841 subscribers, I love each and every one of you so thank you for that but we're going to click on the big fat analytics.
I can't say that word today for some reason and looking good according to the algorithm bot.
Looking good, your channel is doing pretty much as usual but I’m going to show you why it's not quite as usual in quite a major way.

But you can see I’m getting 31000 views 1.6k hours a month and my estimated revenue at the moment - I’m in the middle of December - it's looking like 274 dollars... but if I click on the revenue tab first, because I know that's... that's really what you want to see isn't it.
Have a look at these months.
A little peek... a little bit of spoiler there.
Let's cut away to explain why this month is so different.
I deleted removed or unlisted 146 videos.
Here's some footage of it running under here right now.

You know what, I think it's one of my favourite videos, but the big story this month is that I removed half of my videos.
I used to have about 306 and then I did a massive experiment where I effectively made 146 ones disappear because I want to niche this channel.
This channel it has just got so much stuff coming from all different directions, look they've got travel videos and how to's...
I wanted to see what would happen if I removed them I wasn't expecting to remove half of the videos from my channel.
I did that at the start of October and you can see that October is pretty much the same as September, and the revenue went up!
It went up with half the videos live.
I got 20 dollars more, I got a 10% uplift in my revenue.
Things are changing outside of my channel anyway.
I believe that revenue always goes up between September and December because there are more advertisers selling more stuff.
First up it's October and if I go to the overview I’ve got 36000 views.
I removed all the videos on the 5th of October?
There is a drop in views.
There's a really clear drop in views.

I was getting about 1400 a day, then I removed half the videos and I started getting about a thousand views per day - which I’m not complaining about - and I think they are better views and we'll drill into some more figures if niching my channel so aggressively has had some benefits to my channel.
Let's compare this to November, so my views are down 4000 in November.
The watch time has dropped ever so slightly.
Subscribers are similar but the revenue... the revenue has gone crazy!
We can see that my RPM which is revenue per mille - or revenue per thousand views overall - it's $8.71
That's usually quite good.
If I compare that with October, it's gone up over a dollar so that means I’m already making more money per thousand views which is a good thing.
So were there any downsides with removing so many videos from my channel?
Let's go back to October and I’m going to click on reach.

Now reach is where it shows my click-through rate.
Now click-through rates as you might be aware, is the percentage of impressions or basically thumbnails.
If I scroll down to the impressions funnel.
I should put an echo on that shouldn't I.
The impressions funnel!

It sounds like something that I really do not want from my doctor... so we went from 300000 impressions to 16000 views which is a 5.4% click-through rate and the average view duration is 2 minutes 49, which is up.
It's up hugely so I think another huge benefit of niching your channel and removing poorly performing videos is that my average view duration overall went up.
It used to be around well under two and a half minutes.

Literally the very next day after I removed the videos, that went up to two minutes 49 and it's gone even higher since then.
Whether that brings me more money in the future we'll wait and see.
Let's compare this funnel with November and watch the figures jump.
The views from impressions stayed the same.
The click-through rate went up from 5.2 percent and the average view duration - look - that's gone up even higher!

I have removed half of the videos from my channel and the average time that people spend on videos has gone up quite significantly.
On the engagement tab I’m going to have to put the month in the corner.
This was October, I got 1.7k hours, 2:48 average view duration and in November the watch time stayed about the same - it's down eight percent.

The view duration has gone up.
There's a new interesting window on the analytics.
This is called “key moments for audience retention” and it shows me the videos that have had this-- the slowest drop-off.

So my amazon associates - how much I earn from amazon associates - still has 82% watching at 30 seconds.
If you want to compare my drop-offs with your drop-offs I’ve got them playing in the window now.
I’ve not seen this metric before and serves as a reminder to try and stuff as much as possible into the first 30 seconds of every video.

But I think my biggest surprise is... is my revenue each month because I was convinced that I would lose a lot of money.
And in October my revenue stayed the same and let's go down to the months.
It hasn't been going down, let's put it that way.

I really thought that by losing so many videos, that I would take a hit on the revenue so I was shocked that it stayed the same and it's going up.
And if I look at the last 28 days, we're halfway through December, my estimated revenue at the moment is $274
274 dollars, which is kind of comparable with the last couple of months.

My top videos for the last 28 days that they're just there.
You can see the garden tools videos that I didn't delete because I’m a wuss, they've dropped because it's not summer here in the UK at the moment.
We've got “how to change your mobile phone in the UK”.

My all-time big hitter is the zoom video files.
Let's take a look at the revenue from this.
Oh my goodness, so since I’ve published this video I’ve had 25000 views.
278 dollars from one video.
Oh if only I could get one of those out every month.
That would be really helpful.

The RPM is higher than my average because I think I get a global audience for this.
Yeah look, 32% of my viewers are in the United States, so that's going to push my RPM up, and for a typical month, let's look at the last 28 days...
Yeah $64 a month.
We'll see if that stays the same in January.
I think there's going to be a massive drop off.
And maybe you're wondering what did I do with the 146 videos?

I’ve now started up five channels, so let's take a look.
This is my regular channel that you're watching now.
The Neil Mossey channel.
I moved all of my product reviews my garden tools my how to's...
I moved those onto my Tightwad Dad channel.
I’ll put a link up top and in the description if you want to chart the progress there.
How many have I got?
Oh it's not too bad I’ve got about 15 videos up and 9 subscribers, so that's a good experiment.
My IKEA dad channel.

Oh my goodness, I’ve got a whole video about how to set up a YouTube channel and I set up my IKEA dad channel.
I’ve made so many ikea videos in the last month, I just haven't had time to upload them.
And this is the huge downside with niching that if you do separate them onto other channels you're kind of diluting the time that you've got.
And my-- I was going to say, I was going to say my favourite channel.

I am fond of the trains channel, again I’ve got dozens of videos ready to go on this and I just haven't uploaded them yet.
So what do you think?
Was removing 146 videos a good thing or a bad thing, and is it something you're considering for your channel?

And how is your channel doing?
Please leave a comment below, I’d love to see how your channels are doing.
And if you like these videos, where I go through my analytics and share... share my financial pain with you, why not give me a thumbs up?
It will help others to find it and it will help me to... to make more of them and right now here, this is what YouTube thinks you should be watching next.

I cannot tell you how little light there was on this shoot! This is the Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line steam illuminations in Alton: bright lights in near darkness... I really wanted to try video test footage for the Sony ZV1 camera coping with perhaps the most challenging low light conditions I can think of.

Everything is shot on intelligent auto with the in-built microphone for sound.
At times the ZV-1 night footage looks a little soft, with a few moments of focus hunting, but there was next to no light whatsoever and the camera is hand held, not on a tripod, so the footage to me is incredible.  If you're thinking of buying a Sony ZV 1 camera, this video might give you an idea of what night time video footage you might be getting straight out of the camera.

How to CHANGE my YouTube channel name 2021

How do I change my YouTube channel name?
What is a Google Brand Account, and how does it affect a YouTube brand channel?
If you rename your YouTube channel - leave the name in the comments below!

I rename my YouTube channel in real time, as a step-by-step tutorial - it's really easy...
And then I go on to change YouTube channel name so that the channel doesn't have a first name and last name. To do this, we need to create a Google brand account, sign out of that account, sign back into the YouTube channel we want to rename, and then move that channel to the renamed brand account.

THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT - CLICK PLAY ON THE VIDEO ABOVE!

Hello!
How do I change-- I don't know why I'm shouting.
How do I change the name of my YouTube channel?
That is an excellent question and one that I hope to answer with you by actually changing the channel name of my channel right here in front of you before your very eyes in real time!

My name is Neil Mossey, I'm a digital development producer helping high achieving creators and performers just like you.
There's a sound effect.
A high five would be better than a dig wouldn't it?

To get ideas out of your head and out onto here on YouTube.
We need your channel but first we need your channel name to be changed just like mine, so let's take a look at my YouTube studio.
The first thing we can do is click on the three lines here to expand our menu.
Now you should be familiar with this if you run a channel, but the section that you want is the tab down here.

It's called customization, so click on that and of course make sure that you are logged into the channel that you want to change.

You can do that up in the top right hand side here just by clicking switch accounts and then choosing the one that you want to change.
So we're in this channel here it's called "Neilnypops trains and stops"

It seemed like an excellent name for a channel when I set this up, but we can see three tabs here under channel customization.
There's the "layout"...
There's a whole other video on this in the description: this is where you can change how your channel looks when someone goes to the home page of your channel.

The second tab is branding and this is where we can change our profile picture and select a banner image.
I've not done mine yet and that will be the subject of another video again that's down in the description.
The tab we want is basic information - "basic info", and I almost didn't find it but the place where we are going to change our channel name is here.

It's above the channel description.
Let's type something in now.
"My channel where I go for walks."
Excellent prose, this is why I'm a development producer...

But where do we change our channel name?
I think it's quite hidden, even though it's really obvious and right at the top if you can see here there's a pen.
Little pen icon.
We can click on that pen or pencil, if I hover over it says "edit channel name".

Click on that and there you go, here's the box where we put our channel name.
I'm just going to call it something slightly different.
I'm going to call it "Trains and stops with Neilnypops" and then we go up to the top right hand corner and hit publish.

And as you can see there's confirmation at the bottom: changes published.
Should we view the channel?
Let's have a quick look at the channel.
I only have one video on here.

I have quite a few videos to put up on this channel, but as you can see the channel name has changed so if you haven't got this box I think you'll have a box that looks like this.
Where you have two boxes.
There's a first name and a last name and that's because this YouTube channel is basically linked to the google account that created it, and the first name as you can see is great story team and I didn't put a last name in.

I didn't set it up properly.
I set it up like it's a person so it's a little bit more tricky to change this channel name.
All we can do is just change the first name and last name.

It's like a personal account and it's totally okay to change it here, so I could put "with Neil Mossey".
All that would happen here is if I save this, it would just change the name of the google account that this is linked to, so it's not quite the same as changing the channel name properly.

What we can do to help explain it better is if you click on the "learn more" there's a whole article here about managing your channel's basic information.
If I click on "change your channel name and description" you can see down here there's a basic explanation which is to use a different name on YouTube than your google account.
You can create a brand account and connect it to your channel.

So let's see if we can do that.
I'm going to do it in real time and we'll see what happens, so I'm going to click on "create a brand account" and there's an explanation here about how brand accounts work.

And I know all you wanted to do is just to change your YouTube channel name but let's go through this.
This is a good idea if you want to use a different name on YouTube and it also helps to manage multiple channels from the one google account: so there's a checklist here.
First check to see if you already have a brand account.

It takes you to this help article but that directs you to this url: YouTube.com/account_advanced and if you click "move channel to a brand account" I'll click on this.
YouTube gives me a little map so it shows that my channel is actually connected to the same google account of the same name, and what we want to do is to move this channel to a brand channel.

But there's no brand channel for me to move it to, so the next task on the list is to go to your channel list.
There's my one channel, it's called great story team.
There are no other channels so we're gonna create a new channel and I'm gonna call this brand account name great story team then hit create.

This channel does not exist.
We know that because we have just created it.
Let's go back to the the help article.
Fill out the details to name the brand account and verify your account then click create.

Well it doesn't let me do that.
Let's go up to the top right hand corner and I've gone into studio, so this is the brand new channel.
This is my brand channel.
Okay so things went a bit weird when I hit create a new channel because it says the next step is to fill out the details to name the brand account and verify your account.

Well as you saw it just went straight to a page that said "channel does not exist" so I'm going to sign out and I'm going to sign back in as the channel that I wanted to move.

Click your profile picture and then we're going to click down here on settings, so in the left menu we're going to click on "advanced settings".
Now we'll go down to here "move channel"
We click to "move channel to a brand account"
There we go.
When you create your brand account you are logged into that brand account.

You need to come out and go back to the channel that you want to move to the brand account that you've just created.
My channel now which is the great story team channel and then after the move so we're going to choose an account so I'm going to select great story team which is the brand account that we just created.

Now it's giving me a warning: Great story team is already connected to another YouTube channel.
Absolutely, do you remember it was the channel that they - that YouTube said doesn't exist.
So what it's saying is... if I move my channel to this brand account, the connected channel there will be deleted.

This must be absolutely terrifying for you if you're about to do this.
I know I'm going to be okay because it's confirming here this channel has zero subscribers no videos and no playlists.
It's just an empty shell of a channel that's just been created, so I'm going to hit delete channel and it shows you what's going to happen.

So my channel now is connected to my greatstoryteam personal account and after the move it's going to be connected to the brand account great story team.
Now the only reason I know it's different is because I have those spaces in the name for that brand account, so I'm going to hit move channel and it's asking you "are you sure you want to do this?"

Your channel name and icon will be updated across YouTube, my channel url - because I have a personalized url - will not change.
That's good, but some content cannot be transferred.
Basically your comments cannot be moved.
I don't know what that means so I'm going to set up a little test.

I'm going to leave a comment on one of my other videos, on my other channel and we're going to see what happens to my comments... because you might have a lot of comments out there that you do not want to lose.
So I'm going to go into my own video on the Neil Mossey channel - this channel.
I'm gonna leave a comment: Do I still exist?
Wish me luck.

We'll see what happens to that comment after I've made the move.
Uh look what's happened!
So the comment still exists but look - the avatar has completely disappeared!
Let's click on the avatar, yeah look it's disappeared.
So I'm going to hit move channel.
Big moment.

My channel has been successfully moved, so my great story team channel that used to be the personal channel of the google account greatstoryteam has now been moved to a brand account that's called great space story space team.
It might take up to 10 minutes for updates on my account to be completed.
That's okay.
Now I would just step away from the computer for 10 minutes and let YouTube to do its thing because it is pretty terrifying when you get messages like this.

Don't create a new channel whatever you do.
We'll just let it let it go through.
I was worried my great story team channel has one of my highest rated videos, it's this one here: how to set the clock on a Lamona oven.

As you can see I've had 223000 views, but excitingly look - that's the channel now!
Instead of greatstoryteam, one word, it comes under great story team, three words.
I think the move has gone through successfully.
I'm just worried if I click this I'm worried it's gonna just completely wipe out my channel.
I think I've worked this out.

Because we have moved my channel greatstoryteam one word to the brand account great story team, three words, it's basically freed up a channel here.
Which we don't need.

So that this could be a brand new channel, so we don't need to "create channel"
All we need to do is to sign in on our brand account, so I'm going to sign out.
We're going to sign back in and it asks "Do I want to use YouTube as my personal account greatstoryteam or my brand accounts great space story space team"

Let's go for the brand account and now if I go to YouTube studio... oh there they are.
Oh my goodness that was terrifying!
Close!
So do you see what's happened?
Because we moved that channel to this brand account, it freed up some space for a brand new YouTube channel on the place that we've moved from.

So to go into your channel that you've moved, you've got to sign out and you've got to sign back in again and choose the brand account.
And I'm going to click on "customization" and then we'll go to "basic info" and then we'll click on the pencil.
There you go.

That was so difficult, so here we can see this is where you can change your channel name now.
And it's not as "first name" "last name" like we had before.
What we have now is a big long box where you can write a title.

I don't know how long this title can be?
There we go, right so the name has to be 50 characters or less.
And that is how you change your YouTube channel name.

If you hit the subscribe button, you'll be up to date with my new experiments online and let me wreck my little experimental channels before you damage your YouTube channel.
If you want to see more about how to set up a brand account, there's this video here.

I do a complete walkthrough on the difference between a personal account on YouTube and a brand account.
And up here is what YouTube thinks you should be watching next.
Thanks for joining me and good luck with renaming your YouTube channel.
