How long does it take the DJI Osmo Nano camera to overheat when filming at 4K 50p (50 frames per second). I run the camera on a 1 hour bus journey to see if I can film the entire length of London's route 139 bus with the DJI Nano - will the overheating problem stop the camera, or will the battery run out first. If you want to know how long the Osmo Nano battery lasts or how long before it overheats, this test could be for you. Plus loads of 4K sample footage on Rocksteady stabilization.
PS I finally worked out that I lost audio on the Nano because I taped over the logo!
The internal mic is (deliberately?!) next to the DJI logo...
*I paid for the DJI Osmo Nano camera myself and I'm not sponsored!*

Hello. This seems to be something challenging a lot of people and that is how long does a battery last on one of these DJI Osmo Nano and there are quite a few videos out at the moment complaining that it shuts down because of overheating or that the battery doesn't last very long. I'm going to take this little camera on a big journey through London. Right, this is Waterloo. Now, the trouble for me with all the complaints online is that I... for me... this is an action camera. So, it just seems slightly odd to me as a vlogger why you would want to put a action camera on 50 frames or 60 frames per second at 4K and run it for 2 hours. For me, I'd just use this in quick bursts, probably 10 minutes at the most. Oh, it's all kicking off here. Or the task that I'm going to try and set myself today, which is to start a bus journey from over here, the 139, one of my favorite bus routes in London, and see how far North I can get. Can I get this camera all the way to Golders Green on 4K 50 frames per second? I don't think it's going to make West Hampstead. Now, I'm going to be measuring the battery level and and also let you know if it conks out through overheating along the way. I can't believe it. I've just missed the bus I've been waiting for for 15 minutes. Okay, so we'll get the next one. But it's okay because the next one's in 4 minutes. I can't believe I missed that. And it gives me a chance to admire these two new Bakerloop buses. That was originally the bus I was going to get today, but I... I'm from Camden. I don't feel safe south of the river, so I'm... I'm going to head north for this test. And to get on the bus, I'm wearing the DJI Osmo Nano. I won't be wearing the screen. I'm just using that to top up the battery to make sure I'm at 100%. And I've taped over the DJI logo just to make it a bit less ostentatious.

So, I've put the camera at the front of the bus. It's running now. And I've got the multivision dock here.

Now, there is all sorts wrong with this test because so much can affect it. So, the first thing is I don't have the screen attached. Uh, I don't know if that makes it warmer to have it charging up while it goes or whether this dissipates the energy. Also, I've left the protective case on the DJI Nano. I think the protective case dissipates the heat. I did think of taking it off cuz I thought that would keep it cooler. It might act as some kind of jacket, but I think the case cools it down. The battery at the moment... we are coming up to 10 minutes in. So 10 minutes in, we are at 80%. That's a really easy figure there. So 10 minutes. 80%. Um I'm still charging up the the screen. I know it's cheating slightly, but I want this to be 100% when it starts charging. It's not burning. It's just slightly warm after 10 minutes. So we're at 80%. Let's see if we can keep going. Um, I think I'll put the vision dock on when we hit something like 20%. So that it can charge it up and get a full charge. So this is more about I think the overheating than the charging, but I'll let you know how the charging the battery goes as we go.

Here's what happens next. The camera, I mean, look at it. It worked beautifully uh running away at 4K 50 frames per second for about 38 minutes and I... I've just put on screen that how the battery level drops... it seemed pretty uniform all the way and then when it hits around 17% on the camera battery I thought I better fit the multi-functional vision dock. So, I attached the screen and it... that seemed to cause a big problem. The... the battery was going down very quickly after after about 20%. As soon as I attached the vision dock, obviously that's a charger and that seemed to add heat and it suddenly said that the camera had stopped charging because it was overheating, but it was still recording. And then quite soon after that, within a minute, it just stopped recording altogether. So, I got 38 minutes at 4K 50 frames per second. I think that's incredible. By the way, I bought this with my own money. I'm not sponsored by DJI. I'm uh probably a little bit of a fanboy judging by how many DJI products I have, but I've got no skin in this game. I think running a camera, any camera for 38 minutes at 4K 50 is incredible. So then I decided to take the camera off the vision dock and try to cool it down. I cooled it down in my hands. So I... I took it out of the protective case and I was just... it was... it was hot. It was very hot. Uh, so I took it out the case and I was literally cooling the camera down with my hands only for about a minute and it seemed to work again. What seems clear to me is that the protective case that DJI very kindly give to us, I think it's there to stop our hands burning, I don't think it's there to dissipate heat, and it seemed to really cool down much more quickly with the cover off. But obviously, it's heating up to a point where you can burn yourself. So, I was okay with that cuz I wanted... I really wanted the shot. I really wanted the bus to get to Golders Green Station. So, then I ran it again. I can see from the footage, you're seeing it as a time lapse, but it actually ran in real time for 10 minutes 45 seconds where it it powered off again overheating. What was interesting was that the overheating happened before the battery depletion. So, if you're wondering what's going to come first, overheating or running out of battery, it's definitely going to overheat at 4K 50 frames per second. So, I... I think maybe I shouldn't have been trying to charge it up quite as much as I did, but it did really need to seem the charge cuz it it seemed to stay at 11% from here on in. And then it went for another 12 minutes 39 seconds and it overheated. And unfortunately overheated in I think one of my favorite places of London, West Hampstead. Absolutely loved this. I really wanted to capture it and that was when it... it... it failed. And then I ran it again, this time for another 6 minutes 40 seconds. Between each overheat, I'd cradle it in my hands to just try and cool it down, blow on it, blow on my hands, put it on again, and it ran for 5 minutes 54 seconds. I actually stopped it myself cuz we were stopped at traffic lights. That wasn't an overheat, but then another 2 minutes it did overheat again. So, I got about 7 minutes on the next burst.

But guess what?
I managed to get to Golders Green with the DJI Osmo Nano from Waterloo at 4K and 50 frames per second. I hope some of these figures uh are useful to you. But what I have learned from this is that if I wanted to run it for a long time, I would definitely take off the protective cover. You know, this plastic protective cover that comes with the DJI Nano. I think it's there to stop you burning yourself. Also, having the camera disconnected from the vision dock so that is it isn't charging. I think that keeps it cooler. I think having the multifunctional vision dock heats it up and maybe you need to do that to... to charge the battery up, but the more it was disconnected, I think the better the battery life and definitely it stopped it heating quite so quickly. For me, it's... it's not that bad. I think it's really good. I don't think I can ever see myself in a scenario where I want to run the camera for an hour at 4K 50 frames per second. But obviously your case needs may vary. It did cool down quite quickly to get another burst. And when it started again, it would go for about 7 minutes each time. When I see videos on YouTube complaining of the overheating, they seem to just leave the camera static in a room and uh just run it for however long. And that's that's very useful. It's great benchmarking, but it isn't real vlogging. So to to all of you out there, if you are creating a channel where you need 50 frames per second, maybe you're a runner, or maybe you are a transport nerd like me, uh I can completely understand. uh your frustration at not being able to go over 40 minutes, but I just won't use it that way. And I hope that some of the figures of the the battery going down and of the timings for the overheating, I hope they help gauge whether or not you want to have this camera. And if you have reached this point of the video, thank you so much for hitting the thumbs up or the subscribe button. It really means a lot to me. It helps me keep this channel going and helps me to keep you making more videos for YouTube. And right here are all my other DJI Osmo Nano videos.
